DE&S employees have been helping students discover how to turn their career ambitions into reality during a two-day careers event.

Joining companies such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus UK and the North Bristol NHS Trust, a team of DE&S Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassadors manned a stand at Ambitions 2018, held at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS).
More than 2,000 pupils from secondary schools in the Bristol area attended the event and in a bid to inspire the pupils about opportunities available at DE&S, they were able to try their hand at programming.

Using LEGO MINDSTORMS the pupils programmed two robots to work in harmony and swap places on a set grid.
The task was the brainchild of DE&S engineering group’s chief technician Robert Bates and has been successfully used at several DE&S supported STEM events.
DE&S STEM ambassador Luke Sullivan said:
“The pupils took to the stand really well and there was a nice balance of learning how to programme but also working as a team with the person programming the other robot to ensure they didn’t crash.
“I hope they go away both inspired about engineering and with more idea of the exciting things we do at DE&S.”
In addition to the stands, a careers evening was held where STEM ambassadors from DE&S could engage with families wanting to know more about the organisation and the apprentice schemes available.
Ella, 12, of Marlwood School in Alveston, said:
“I found the DE&S stand really fun. I enjoy using computers and liked the challenge of having to programme the robots. I think engineering is definitely something I will consider pursuing.”
