“Being able to work with such a skilled and knowledgeable team means I’m learning all the time. I’m given the licence to create and come up with new ideas and improve our presence on DE&S external channels.”
This is Ruby, a digital marketing apprentice, she was a DE&S business manager for two years before joining the Corporate Communications team.
Ruby Smith was a business manager for two years before joining the Corporate Communications team as a digital marketing apprentice based at Abbey Wood, Bristol.
She feels the licence to be creative and help promote DE&S positively to the outside world are some of the big plusses of her role.
“I was really keen to explore other areas of the business and develop my skills in comms,” said the 25-year-old. “I was approached with this opportunity and it seemed like a no-brainer.
“The apprenticeship covers all aspects of digital marketing, from social media and website building to content creation and external campaign analytics.
“I’d done an apprenticeship before joining DE&S and really enjoyed it, so when I was given this chance to move teams and start a new qualification I jumped at the chance.
“Being able to work with such a skilled and knowledgeable team means I’m learning all the time. I’m given the licence to create and come up with new ideas and improve our presence on DE&S external channels.
“DE&S’ reputation is extremely important, so being involved in shaping this is extremely rewarding. I’ve also been really proud to be recognised positively by senior leaders at DE&S, including the CEO, for the work we’ve done on improving our social media channels.”
Ruby has also been able to get and see the vehicles and equipment DE&S procures for UK Armed Forces, covering some of the UK’s biggest defence exhibitions including Farnborough International Airshow and the DVD land event at Millbrook.
“I really enjoy the variation within my job,” Ruby added. “One of the highlights was being able to attend DVD, when I was able to look at all the different equipment we procure for the British Army and take a ride in a Boxer vehicle around the test track. That was something I’d never experienced before.
“It’s also great working for DE&S because of the career progression. DE&S invests in its people. If you’re interested in something, they will try their hardest to find opportunities for you.”
