Project Description

DE&S Delivering in 2024

Thanks to the hard work of our people, our partners in industry and our colleagues in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, 2024 marks a year of DE&S delivering for our armed forces in support of operations across the globe today and tomorrow, and helping to make the UK safe, secure and prosperous.

Every day, colleagues across DE&S are working hard to make sure Ukraine has the military equipment it needs to defend itself.

In 2023/24 we delivered £907 million worth of equipment to Ukraine and, in just two years, our Operations team has delivered more than 1,000 equipment projects.

And so far this year, we have delivered over half a £billion in lethal and non-lethal aid.

We are using the learnings from Ukraine in our new operating model to become even more efficient, so we can better equip and support UK Armed Forces and our allies around the globe.

The battle-winning equipment we deliver has a huge impact on the daily lives of our partners across the Armed Forces.

Some of the feedback we’ve received from service personnel:

Colonel William Norcott, speaking about new Commando Raiding Craft:

“This is exciting for us, because it’s a much more powerful craft, it’s much more enjoyable to operate, it’s more tactical and we don’t need the different variants like we currently have. We are really excited to have something that does what it says on the tin.”

Brigadier Matt Wilkinson, praises the lightweight recovery capability for the British Army:

“This is the product of a fantastic collaboration. We now have a lightweight recovery capability which the British Army can use to inform their Future Soldier requirements for recovery vehicles.”

Flt Lt Jamie O’Connor, on new air traffic control systems:

“The impact of Marshall has been a seismic change in how military air traffic services are conducted, from the equipment used to how our operators are trained to deliver the service.”

Sergeant Adam Barnes, of the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, has used the Parrot Anafi extensively:

“The Parrot Anafi USA is brilliant in its use as a small and lightweight reconnaissance drone and for helping in directing fires from mortars and guns. From rifle companies to support company it is increasing our units’ effectiveness ten-fold.”

Other major milestones reached in our efforts to strengthen the UK’s defence capability, include:

  • Overseeing the first successful Sea Venom missile firing from a Wildcat helicopter, creating new offensive capabilities.
  • Supporting the largest NATO military exercise since the Cold War – Steadfast Defender
  • Rapidly procuring 500 new MAN trucks for the British Army to support operational activity
  • Starting build on the third of the Type 31 Frigates, HMS Formidable
  • Flying the ECRS Mk2 radar took for the first time onboard Typhoon, taking it one step further towards an ever more potent part of NATO’s front line fleet
  • Undertaking the first functional flight of the E-7 early warning aircraft. Once in service, both will dramatically enhance the UK’s aerial capabilities.
  • And being part of the team to help launch the Tyche satellite launched orbit to support military operations and track climate change.
