Challenger 2 is the British Army’s Main Battle Tank, providing the UK’s only guaranteed 24-hour, all-weather mobile, protected precision direct fire, anti-tank manoeuvre capability.

The Queen’s Royal Hussars (QRH) make use of the Hohne Ranges, for intense 3 week live fire exercise involving Challenger 2, Main Battle Tanks.
Challenger 2 programme at a glance
- Challenger 2, which entered service in 1998, is currently undergoing a life extension programme which will keep it in service until 2035.
- The vehicle has proven its worth in combat time and again, most notably during operations in Iraq in the 2000s.
- Challenger 2 has a crew of four and carries a 120 millimetre main gun and two 7.62 millimetre machine guns, with a top speed of around 59 kilometres per hour. It is currently in service with the Queen’s Royal Hussars, the King’s Royal Hussars and the Royal Tank Regiment.
- The DE&S Vehicle Support team is responsible for delivering support to the tanks currently in service, while the DE&S Land Concept Assessment team is overseeing the Challenger 2 Life Extension Programme.
