Job description for Sea Safety Equipment Maintainer

Become a lifesaver with DE&S. Join our team and play a crucial role in keeping our ships safe and  our sailors supported and protected. As a Life Raft Maintainer within the Sea Survival Equipment Test Centre (SSETC), you’ll be at the forefront of ensuring the water safety equipment is first-class.

The SSETC are responsible for the provision of all water safety equipment, working closely with the DE&S delivery teams, the Royal Navy, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the Royal Marines, and many other stakeholders, ensuring all ships and boats can legally and safely sail.

You will service and maintain life rafts, ensuring accurate inventory acceptance, safe storage and issuing of various sea survival equipment used for training, protection, and in-service support, anywhere in the world.

This is a physically demanding position with working conditions which include hazardous and regulated environments. It may include inspections and working outside in inclement weather, working at height, in confined spaces and/or in environments where special precautions are required. We will provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which must be worn.

Training will be provided via certified instructor led courses and on-the-job learning, to instil the practical skills and knowledge required to maintain life rafts.

The position requires 100% site-based attendance with a working week of 37 hours across a 4 ½ day week – Monday-Friday.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working both autonomously and as part of a team, providing support for life raft service and maintenance and other areas of the operation as required.
  • Supporting the Delivery Manager in achieving the section’s business objectives.
  • Achieving and maintaining the certification required to maintain various variants of life rafts.
  • The role may require the use of Mechanical Handling Equipment or Forklift Trucks, training will be provided.
  • Monitoring the environment and maintaining a high standard of security, cleanliness, and housekeeping within the facilities to prevent theft, accidents or damage to materials or persons.
  • Adopting a multi-skilled approach in supporting wider depot operations and general logistic and storage activities in accordance with local and departmental policy and procedures.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Basic IT skills, with working knowledge of the Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, and Microsoft Teams).
  • Evidence of a “hands-on” approach to work with good technical skills and the ability to learn and deliver tasks quickly and accurately.
  • Experience and ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, internally and externally, and to all levels of seniority.

It would also be great if you can demonstrate the following desirable criteria

  • Experience of working in a warehouse environment.
