Job description for ROV Supervisor

The ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) team are looking for ROV Supervisor to lead the deployed ROV team as part of the wider SALMO (Salvage and Marine Operations) department.

Our SALMO team is the lead across the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for the provision of marine salvage and emergency response. Our specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Pilots, AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Operators and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations. Our operations are varied and include salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering support to resolve defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas.

The ROV Team delivers discrete outputs within SALMO by using cutting edge commercial ROV technology to provide UK Defence with a deep water salvage capability, as the ROV Supervisor you will be responsible for the safe delivery of ROV operational outputs. This role sits between an IMCA industry Superintendent and an IMCA Supervisor, requiring the post holder to hold some, but not all of the duties of both posts. The post holder will manage a small team of six, including pilot techs, surveyor and maintainer both offshore and onshore and reports to the ROV Senior Superintendent.

This role is operationally important and as such attracts allowances (SALMO Terms and Conditions) depending on the working situation the employee is undertaking at that time.

What you’ll be doing

• Deploy afloat to deliver the in-service operation of the ROV system and work offshore for up to 120 days per year
• Lead and manage the ROV operational team whether deployed or at base
• Support the Senior Superintendent in planning routine and reactive deployments
• Ensure all ROV maintenance is carried out in accordance with the planned maintenance system and defects are reported in a timely manner
• Create and update routine and emergency procedures for use with the SALMO ROV systems
• Ensure the SALMO ROV capability is operated in line with industry best practice
• Manage all deployments in a the safe and environmentally sound manner, being the SALMO Appointed Person responsible for Operating Safely, adhering to the deployment Safety Management Plan and any platform interface responsibilities
• Act as the party chief for deployed tasks and liaise closely with all stakeholders afloat and ashore

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

• You will hold a relevant Level 6 qualification (or higher) in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or have the equivalent subsea knowledge and experience
• ROV Supervisor with demonstrated IMCA competency at (minimum) IMCA ROV Supervisor (R/R02) or company equivalent with work class vehicles
• At least 180 days of logbook demonstrated offshore experience as ROV Supervisor with work class vehicles
• Experience delivering a wide variety of work class ROV outputs which may include site surveys, wreck surveys, manipulator and tooling interaction as well as working in high-risk environments

This role is subject to Retained Grade Terms and Conditions and differ from the DE&S standard Terms and Conditions.

Due to the nature of this role, you are:

• Be fit to pass and maintain a 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical (no geographical limitations)
• This assignment is open to sole UK nationals only
• Be required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
• Be expected to work extended hours as and when required in support of operational commitments
• Be required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of HMNB Devonport
• Have an in date current UK Driving Licence
