Job description for Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Manager

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in delivering and managing Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) activities? We are seeking several dedicated individuals to lead specialist technical acquisition and upgrade projects, ensuring the design of supportable and sustainable equipment and products.

This is your chance to contribute to the development of maintainable, cost-effective, and operationally available capabilities that meet customer requirements. You will be responsible for planning and leading ILS programmes and packages of work. This will involve determining, developing, testing, evaluating, and accepting equipment and product support designs to deliver assured support solutions. You will play a critical role in optimising in-service supply support and maintenance arrangements. While the primary focus of this role is on capability acquisition and the transition into service, you will also have the opportunity to work across all phases of the project lifecycle, ensuring a varied workload.

This role is business-facing, either within a specific delivery team or in a service support assurance or consultancy capacity. It is a key role in leading and delivering ILS acquisition and upgrade programmes, driving capability support design, support solution development, and implementation. Your work will enable capabilities to enter service, meeting customer targets and User & System requirements.

You will play a vital role in influencing business investment decisions by highlighting the whole-life support cost impact. You will also provide expert advice and guidance to in-service teams, customers, suppliers, and functional colleagues, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned in delivering sustainable and supportable solutions. In addition to these responsibilities, you will ensure compliance with relevant legislation, statutory regulations, ILS policies, and standards. You will also adhere to DE&S Business Management System processes, ensuring that all activities are conducted to the highest standards of quality and governance.

 What you’ll be doing

Depending on the role, you will have responsibilities for delivering a range of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) Services, covering the following:

  • Design of ILS programmes, covering ILS task Work Break Downs (WBD)s and strategies to capture; whole life support cost, reliability, maintainability and availability estimates, to be able to influence support requirements, concepts and doctrine.
  • Mapping User Requirements into the supportability system requirements and contractual supply end –to-end support requirements. This includes producing technical evaluation assessment criteria for tendering, awarding, monitoring & assessing contractual performance, and for their achievement to the specified ILS design and support milestone criteria.
  • Producing ILS Plans and Use Cases. This includes monitoring support development progress and agreeing the results of associated ILS trials, tests, evaluations and demonstrations against the related project milestone/target.
  • Producing supportability cases and bodies of evidence for identifying, managing and mitigating supportability risks, to influence optimal approaches by conducting Supportability Analysis (SA) and to negotiate and recommend trade-offs, alternative support solutions and options for consideration.
  • Verifying and validating ILS deliverables to pre-position optimal levels of supply support investments, management regimes and resources, for setting equipment support policy directives on the in-service maintenance and supply chain arrangements.
  • Establishing, maintaining and communicating the through life logistic support technical data information repositories, including content, structure, data module formats, and considering the information/asset access rights and intellectual property design/repair restrictions.
  • Leading a team, including advice and guidance on support matters to everyone within their business areas.
  • Monitoring and implementing governance and assurance policies and procedures, to their assigned business areas, ensuring capability support solutions are cost affordable, supportable and within business and Defence assurance envelopes.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show evidence of meeting the following essential criteria:

  • Delivering and managing an Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) programme/project(s) or major ILS milestone as part of customer service.
  • Evaluating support related reviews for improving support, resolving disputes and reducing whole life cost expenditure.
  • Producing and scrutinising reports for complex issues and trends for communicating
  • recommendations and alternative approaches.
  • Proficiency in use and management of Logistic Information Systems/Repositories

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
