Job description for Environmental Professional 

Are you passionate about protecting the environment and driving sustainable practices? At Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), we are looking for an experienced and motivated Environmental Professional to join our team as an Environmental Professional.  

DE&S is at the forefront of delivering cutting-edge equipment and support to the UK Armed Forces, and sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. As an Environmental Professional, you will play a vital role in ensuring our projects and operations meet the highest environmental standards, helping to safeguard the environment while supporting national defence.

Regular in-person attendance is required to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration alongside flexibility of hours to support work-life balance and business need. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.  

What you’ll be doing

  • Manage contractual aspects to ensure environmental requirements are captured and manage contractors who perform environmental activities.  
  • Specify system-specific environmental requirements with consideration for the environmental consequences of the wider system of systems.  
  • Work with colleagues at all levels to support compliance with all relevant UK legislation, Defence regulations, MOD Policy, and DE&S Policy. Contribute to the development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy the DE&S corporate standards for Environmental Management.   
  • Identify and analyse environmental impacts and contribute to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring these are adequately documented and managed.    
  • Support the development and management of effective Environmental Management Systems, and compliance activities in line with POEMS, on simple sub-systems or with supervision on complex systems.   
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and modification of policy/process to satisfy the DE&S corporate standards for Environmental Management, across a matrix managed organisation working alongside stakeholders and multiple Delivery Teams. 

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:  

  • Lead CriterionHave experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful environmentalacquisition/support outcomes; and  
  • Have technical environmental acquisition/support experience in in a variety of contexts; and  
  • As a minimum hold either:  
  • A Science, Technology,Engineeringand/or Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 6;  
  • A Science, Technology,Engineeringand/or Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 4, pluswith a Professional body/institution related to your discipline hold current professionalregistration at the level listed below;
  • A Science, Technology,Engineeringand/or Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 3, plusa minimum of 3 further years of relevant professional experience;   
  • With a Professional body/institution related to your discipline, hold current professionalregistration at the level listed below, plus a minimum of 3 further years of relevant professionalexperience;(minimum levels provided)   
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech) or   
  • Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) or 
  • Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) 

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:  

  • Core Behaviour 1: Communicating and Influencing (CSBC3)  
  • Core Behaviour 2: Changing and Improving (CSBC3)  
  • Technical Competence 1: ECF_04 Environment Sustainability (4.1 Environmental Policy and Principles) – Supervised Practitioner  
  • Technical Competence 2: ECF_04 Environment Sustainability(4.3 Environmental Aspects and Impacts, and Associated Risks) – Supervised Practitioner
