Job description for Engineering Production Manager

As an Engineering Production Manager, you will lead a small team undertaking roles such as functional testing, diagnostics, repair, and modifications to a wide range of in-service complex weapons. You’ll also schedule a range of production, maintenance, or training activities to an agreed plan. You’ll be knowledgeable in the through life management of complex weapon processing and planning and have a technical skill base in a relevant mechanical/electrical engineering discipline.

This role is 100% site-based and will require travel to other Defence Munitions and DE&S locations in both the UK and abroad. Reasonable notice will be given, with flexibility and a family friendly approach in mind. Travel and subsistence costs will be covered.

What you’ll be doing

  • Overseeing a team that undertakes assembly, maintenance, and functional testing of complex weapons and equipment which shall include mechanical/electrical specialisations.
  • Planning and scheduling for explosive and non-explosive production to ensure that your business areas will achieve their respective build standard controls, production targets, storage requirements and delivery needs.
  • Ensuring that the risk generated by activity in your area is as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) and that there is a strong, positive Safety and Explosives Safety culture.
  • Identifying risks (raising and authorising risk assessments) and issues which impact the ability to satisfy the customer needs.
  • Delivering high quality diagnostic work and carry out any remedial work involving the tracing of faults or malfunctions of equipment and/or plant, ensuring only the correct, authorised, and serviceable equipment is used in support of Complex Weapons whilst assessing the impact of technical decisions on performance, time, cost, risk, safety factors and legislation.
  • Providing technical or engineering support advice to stakeholders and contractors in support of commercial contracts ensuring equipment and service meets required standards. Planning and managing the development for the introduction of new weapons upgrades into DM or the maintenance of current Safe systems of Work (SSOW).
  • Ensuring facilities and equipment meet all statutory and mandatory requirements in respect of Explosives Safety, Occupational Safety, Health and Environment, Quality, Fire, and Facilities Management, prior to commencement of work.
  • Managing staff and monitoring performance, including the allocation, control of workflow, production reporting and technical training.
  • Recruiting and inducting new staff, maintaining a capacity and resource plan to meet supply and demand needs as well as expected service delivery levels.
  • Promoting and actively encouraging continuous improvement, lean processing initiatives across your area and a flexible approach towards operating within a multi-disciplined team.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship at Level 3 in a suitable subject, or equivalent
  • ONC / HNC in a relevant subject
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement with internal and external personnel
  • Experience of leading teams and mentoring people within an engineering environment
  • Experience of planning and scheduling

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

  • Technical Decision Making – Supervised Practitioner level
  • Enhancing Service Support Systems – Practitioner level
  • Delivering at pace – CSBC3
  • Working together – CSBC3
