Job description for Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Manager

Are you an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Manager and want to influence the design of one of the most complex platforms in the World?

Submarine Production (SMP) are responsible for overseeing the build and then proving the capability of Astute Class nuclear submarines. Within SMP, the Secondary Propulsion team are a small group of engineers responsible for the design and delivery of propulsion, electrical and Control & Indication (C&I) systems. This role is deputy to the Secondary Propulsion team lead, and you will provide engineering management to the section, ownership of some of the systems (depending upon specialism), and support to the electrical, mechanical and C&I technical leads as necessary.

For security reasons this role is open to sole UK nationals only. A ‘sole UK national’ refers to an individual who holds citizenship solely in the UK, without dual citizenship or nationality from another country. We’re unable to offer visa sponsorship.

This role requires you to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years and obtain Security Check (SC) security clearance. Clearance must be obtained without any caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role you have been recruited for. If it isn’t obtained or is obtained but with caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role, any conditional offer made to you will be withdrawn. Obtaining SC security clearance can be a lengthy process, and we reserve the right to withdraw any conditional offer made if the necessary security clearance isn’t obtained within 12 months.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide authoritative direction on engineering matters to the Shipbuilder and the Navy on behalf of the section lead
  • Provide engineering support to the mechanical and electrical leads as required
  • Co-ordinate design change and concessions to the design on behalf of the Secondary Propulsion section
  • Build work packages on behalf of the Secondary Propulsion section for maintenance periods during sea trials
  • Co-ordinate the transfer into service of Secondary Propulsion equipment and design information
  • Manage the Secondary Propulsion material state assessment in support of key build milestones
  • Depending upon background, take ownership of some of the mechanical, electrical or C&I systems, managing the delivery of and assuring a demonstrably safe and capable design

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:

  • EFCF 4 Technical Decision Making – Practitioner
  • EFCF 5 Technical Risk Management – Practitioner
  • Communicating and Influencing – CSBC 3
  • Leadership – CSBC 3
