Why did you choose to pursue a career in Project Delivery in DE&S?
I’ve always wanted to work for the Ministry of Defence (MOD). My other half had worked in DE&S for a few years so I’d seen first-hand the work/life balance, as well as the training, development and career progression opportunities. Honestly, I was jealous.
When I found out I was the successful candidate for the role I’m in now, I was very pleased. I knew DE&S would provide the encouragement and support I needed to progress in my career.
What does your Project Controls role entail?
My role is quite varied, but my main responsibilities include maintaining the project schedule, monitoring risks and creating cost performance reports for earned value management as part of the monthly review. A large part of my role is assessing the way in which the organisation is managing its business and people.
What are the opportunities to develop and progress within Project Delivery?
I help to organise ‘speed mentoring’ events at DE&S, which provide newcomers with the opportunity to ask a wide range of questions to people from across the organisation to help them better understand how we work and to overcome any nerves that the new joiners might have. I took part in one of these events myself, when I joined DE&S and I found it to be a great safe space to ask questions about career progression. The advice I received was extremely motivational, I have since found a mentor who is helping me action the advice I was given.
What do you most enjoy about your Project Controls job?
I enjoy interacting with people so I’m glad I get to work with lots of stakeholders, both internally and externally. I also like knowing no one day will be the same, and I’m always learning something new.
Why would you recommend DE&S to others as a great place to work?
If you like variety, enjoy a challenge and want the opportunity to be part of something wider than your role, DE&S is a great environment in which to do this. I’m glad I chose to work in an organisation which drives training, career progression, and allows you to gain the experience required to be the best you can be.
