Job description for Munitions Support Operative

As a WOME (Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions, and Explosives) Support Operative, you will engage in tasks related to Defence Munitions, including receipting, storage, issuing, and inventory management. Your role will also encompass associated documentation and IT support, ensuring that our armed forces receive timely and effective supplies.
You will be working on site, in our warehouses, and on-board docked naval vessels, adhering to safety guidelines and procedures to ensure the safe, effective, and consistent handling and storage of ammunition and explosives. You will be a proactive team player who can adapt to frequently changing, customer-focused environments. The work is physically demanding and often takes place in challenging conditions, such as poor weather, at height, in confined spaces, working over water and with materials like explosives or live ammunition.
Comprehensive training will be provided, covering explosives and non-explosives stores accounting, inventory management, and the use of various warehouse/logistics IT systems. You will gain expertise in the through-life management of explosive and non-explosive inventory, including road and waterfront support. Additionally, there is an opportunity to work towards a National Occupational Standard (NOS) portfolio qualification.

This role is 100% site based, with some travel to our other sites being necessary. A sustenance allowance is provided.

What you’ll be doing
- Handling munitions and explosives in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operating a variety of Manual Handling Equipment (MHE), including cranes and vehicles and various hand tools.
- Maintaining a high standard of security, cleanliness and housekeeping within the explosive’s storage and processing facilities.
- Checking all routine and/or priority receipts and that issues are investigated, and any paper and computer records are accurately completed.
- Assisting with all logistics and storage activities to ensure that customers’ requirements are met on time and in full, this may include working on-board HM Ships & Submarines and other military establishments.
- Processing in adherence to production schedules/targets regarding safety, time, cost, and quality.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- Some knowledge of inventory and warehousing.
- Basic IT skills in MS packages. (Training will be provided for a range of bespoke computer systems).
- Experience working within a customer-focused team environment, delivering to tight timescales.
- Examples of working in a physically demanding environment
