Project Description
We are proud to be playing a vital role in fostering the UK’s prosperity and strengthened security through strategic procurement. In a major milestone moment, HMS Cardiff, the second of eight Type 26 frigates being built by BAE Systems under a contract procured by DE&S, officially entered the water for the first time in 2024, marking a significant step forward for the Royal Navy’s new fleet.

The Type 26 programme is more than just a fleet renewal – it is a significant boost to the UK economy. Supporting 1,700 BAE Systems jobs in Scotland and around 2,300 jobs across the wider UK maritime supply chain until 2035, the programme exemplifies how DE&S procurement strategy is driving both national security and economic prosperity.
As the most advanced cutting-edge anti-submarine warfare frigate, the Type 26 ships are set to replace the retiring Type 23 frigates and will become the backbone of the Royal Navy’s surface fleet, providing critical protection for the Continuous At-Sea Deterrent and Carrier Strike Group.
With cutting-edge technology, the new fleet of ships will be equipped with an array of sophisticated weapons, communications systems and advanced sensors. Their design will be inherently flexible, allowing the Royal Navy greater choice in operational tasking through the incorporation of modular systems and incremental upgrades to its systems throughout the life of the class.
Sponsored by Welsh singing star Katherine Jenkins, HMS Cardiff set sail towards her next stop at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard in August 2024 where she is now undergoing the next stages of outfitting, testing, and commissioning thanks to the contract procured by DE&S.
Due to enter service in 2028, these eight state-of-the-art frigates will play a crucial role in safeguarding the UK’s interests and ensuring a thriving maritime industry for years to come.
