What is the DE&S Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship?
Our Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship could be your ticket to an exciting career at the Ministry of Defence. You’ll learn through practical and academic training, as you work towards a Level 4 HNC Engineering Qualification. Throughout the scheme, you’ll complete technical work-based placements within a wide range of specialist areas. And as your confidence grows, so will your skills, with the help of a dedicated support team to help you succeed.

What you’ll need
To apply for this scheme, you’ll need:
- Five GCSEs at grade C-A* or Grades 4-9 (Including English Language, Maths, and a Science or Engineering subject)
Please note, candidates with higher level qualifications in Engineering (for example, A levels) may not be eligible for this scheme.
What you’ll do
During the first year of your apprenticeship, you’ll be at college full-time learning core engineering skills. You’ll also be studying for a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, which typically involves activities such as turning, milling and welding. Alongside this, you’ll also study for a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing, taught through classroom delivery.
You’ll complete a number of technical-focused placements supporting cutting edge military equipment in different areas, with block release to attend the training to further enhance your academic study.
Once you’ve successfully completed your apprenticeship, you could be involved in:
- Managing equipment/system modifications and updates
- Providing advice and support to military users
- Liaising with MoD personnel, contractors and military users
- Specifying tasks for contractors
- Reviewing and analysing technical reports
- Controlling the configuration of technical information
- Becoming a specialist in an engineering field

DE&S is currently operating a Smarter Working Policy, where hybrid working may be available depending on your placement/project.
However, we cannot specifically advise in advance of you joining the organisation. It could mean being situated in office three times a week, or twice a month. We strongly encourage face-to-face collaboration to network with your peers and gain further experience.
You will be able to discuss your daily working hours with your Delivery Manager on starting.
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a place to those who do not meet the entry requirements for the scheme.
