Maritime Multi Link milestone unlocks next-generation communications for Royal Navy fleet

DE&S, part of the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) National Armaments Director Group has reached a key milestone in the Maritime Multi Link (MML) programme, achieving the Equipment Delivery Date for Phase 2c, a significant step forward in how Royal Navy ships share critical battlefield information.
MML Phase 2c delivers Satellite Tactical Data Link (STDL) and Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol (JREAP-C) capability to Royal Navy platforms, alongside important updates to Link 11 and Link 16 message sets. Together, these technologies allow tactical data to be communicated over the horizon via satellite.
The operational potential of this upgrade was demonstrated during Carrier Strike Group 25, when an early version of the JREAP-C capability was successfully deployed aboard HMS Prince of Wales and her escorts. This enabled the group to share a real-time view of the operational environment with locations well beyond line of sight, transforming how the strike group was able to operate.
With the Equipment Delivery Date now achieved, the Situational Awareness Command and Control (SACC) Delivery Team, the Navy Acquisition Programme Team and Navy Command can begin fitting the Phase 2c capability across 13 Royal Navy platforms, including Type 23 Frigates, Type 45 destroyers, and Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

Delivering the Equipment Delivery Date for Phase 2c required overcoming considerable challenges, including delays in equipment contracting that demanded alternative procurement approaches, as well as rigorous software assurance within a highly congested testing and assurance schedule. These outcomes were made possible through strong collaborative working using a Joint Working Team approach across NCSISS, the SACC Delivery Team, and BAE and contributes to the overarching DE&S KPI performance metrics.”

By delivering cutting-edge communications technology to the Royal Navy's most capable surface platforms, the MML programme directly contributes to ensuring that British armed forces remain equipped, connected, and ready to operate effectively in an increasingly complex and contested global environment.
