What is the DE&S Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprenticeship?

If you’re interested in studying for a degree and earning while you learn, our Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprenticeship is for you. The first three years provide practical, vocational and academic training towards an Engineering Foundation Degree and you can continue a further two years towards a BEng Degree. You’ll also complete several work-based training placements, all while you’re completing the relevant vocational qualifications in preparation for engineering roles within current and future defence programmes.

What you’ll need

To apply for this scheme, you’ll need:

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4-9 (C to A*) including English Language, Maths and Science (preferably Physics)

and either:

  • Three A Levels including Maths and Science (preferably Physics) at a minimum B, C, C or above

or

  • A national diploma in Engineering equivalent to a minimum 96 UCAS points

or

  • A minimum of 96 UCAS points in relevant STEM subject

What you’ll do

You’ll attend University College Weston to complete a National Vocational Qualification NVQ Level 2 in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering. This will include practical workshop experience including hand and machining skills, both mechanical and electrical. You’ll also start a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering Manufacturing, which will include subjects like stress and dynamics, aero structures, engineering maths, energy and thermodynamics, design materials and CAD/CAM.

You’ll continue studying for your Bachelor’s degree (part-time) with University College Weston at Global Technology Centre part of the GKN Aerospace facility in Bristol. You will also start a series of work-based placements which will provide you with much of the experience that you’ll need to take on a role within the business. You’ll also:

  • Gain the evidence to complete the NVQ Level 4 in Engineering Manufacture
  • Work alongside experienced project managers and engineers working on real projects and experiencing the challenges of maintaining aircraft
  • Spend time working with partners like BAE Systems, Airbus Defence, Thales and Leonardo
  • Spend time at RAF Stations like Brize Norton, Coningsby and Odiham

With a further two years of study, you’ll complete a part-time degree in Aerospace Engineering (BEng). You’ll also continue to move around the business gaining even more knowledge and experience to prepare yourself for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (I Eng).

DE&S is currently operating a Smarter Working Policy, where hybrid working may be available depending on your placement/project.

However, we cannot specifically advise in advance of you joining the organisation. It could mean being situated in office three times a week, or twice a month. We strongly encourage face-to-face collaboration to network with your peers and gain further experience.

You will be able to discuss your daily working hours with your Delivery Manager on starting.

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a place to those who do not meet the entry requirements for the scheme.
