Job description for Systems Engineer

At DE&S, we’ve created an exciting and empowering place to work in our Internal Technical Support (ITS) team. In this team, you’ll apply systems engineering and consultancy skills to engage with and deliver to project teams across our Land, Maritime, Air and Space domains.

You’ll be based out of one of the locations listed below, based on your preference, however these roles are exceedingly flexible and offer flexible and hybrid working options to empower you to make decisions about when, where, and how you work. These roles do have some travel expectations; however, this is typically limited to other UK locations and comes with advance notice.

In this team, you’ll work closely with customers across a range of delivery teams to help solve some of the most complex problems in Defence. You’ll enjoy a variety of work, with the ability to support a number of platforms and engage a wide variety of stakeholders. You’ll join a team that continues to exceed customer expectations, providing technical solutions to challenging problems. You will have the opportunity to work across the entire project life-cycle and be instrumental in helping translate military customer needs into clear technical and contractual requirements. You will oversee delivery, develop robust acceptance plans, and solve in-service problems.

The ITS team offers the opportunity to provide consultancy on fascinating Defence projects, including the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Protector Remote Piloted Air Systems, Autonomous Systems, Submarines, Tactical Data Links, Guided Weapons, Challenger 2 LEP, Skynet, Air Defence Systems, Space and Land based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. There’ll also be the chance to work on broader improvement projects, including developing an approach and way of thinking to coordinate activities to realise value from assets, drawing a line of sight through the organisation.

You’ll have the option to choose the site you’ll be based at from the list below:

  • MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol, BS34 8JH
  • MOD Manchester, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD
  • Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX

Please note some attendance to the stated site may be required for this position.

Hear from DE&S Systems Engineer, Andrew:

“I joined ITS in early 2021 and have never looked back – I’ve worked on a number of complex tasks, where I Scope, Plan and Deliver packages of work to our customers. Here, I’m excited by the variety of work, challenged by the complexity of systems, and enthused by the knowledge I’m making a real difference. I look forward to progressing my career in ITS.”
