DE&S have created an exciting and empowering place to work in Internal Technical Support (ITS). In this team you will apply Systems Engineering and Consultancy Skills to engage with and deliver to Project Teams across all areas – Land, Maritime, Air and Space. You will be based out of the location listed above in the advert, however these roles are exceedingly flexible and offer smarter working to empower you to make decisions about when, where and how you work. These roles do have some travel expectations, however this is typically limited to other UK locations and comes with advance notice.

The Internal Technical Support – Systems Engineering Team (ITS-SE) work closely with clients across a range of delivery teams to help solve some of the most complex problems in Defence. Individuals in this team enjoy the variety of work with the ability to support a number of platforms and engage a vast number of stakeholders. The ITS SE team continues to exceed client expectation, providing novel or system engineering solutions to challenging problems. You will have the opportunity to work across the entire project life-cycle and be instrumental in helping clients translate military customer needs into clear technical and contractual requirements. You will oversee delivery, develop robust acceptance plans, and solve in-service problems.

The ITS Team has provided consultancy support across a range of projects, including the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Protector Remote Piloted Air Systems, Autonomous Systems, Submarines, Tactical Data Links, Guided Weapons, Challenger 2 LEP, Skynet, Air Defence Systems, Space and Land based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. As well as broader improvement projects including developing an approach and way of thinking to coordinate activities to realise value from assets, drawing a line of sight through the organisation.

Responsibilities for Systems Engineer

The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:

As a Systems Engineering Consultant, you will collaborate with colleagues to deliver and support our military capabilities, working alongside delivery teams to support routine activities and respond creatively to emerging challenges. You will develop a range of system engineering products, including requirements documents, integrated test and evaluation plans, innovative system and capability architectures, and engineering management plans. You will ensure that these products meet your client’s needs, addressing the unique situation each project faces.

You will drive some of the most complex and critical programmes forward, making a real difference to lives in the UK and abroad, and advancing state of the art systems engineering.

The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Understanding the inter-dependencies and interrelationships between systems.
  • Developing innovative solutions to complex problems by thinking across technical and professional disciplines.
  • Explaining complex issues in a simple and compelling way to clients.
  • Providing technical consultancy by working with customers to understand their needs, scoping for the work and delivering it with pace and impact.

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • You will hold a minimum of a Level 4 qualification (e.g. HNC or higher) in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline, or have equivalent relevant experience
  • You will have demonstrable experience applying systems engineering methods
  • You will have experience of providing technical consultancy services skills from within a regulated environment
  • You will have demonstrable evidence of stakeholder management
