The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) has an exciting career opportunity for an eager Engineer to join our team. You will be joining as a Nuclear Safety Engineer, championing equipment and engineering safety for our Armed Forces. You will have direct contact and consultation with senior management, will impact across multiple facets of the SDA and will gain unrivalled exposure to engineering disciplines and progressive opportunities in engineering.

In the role of Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will support the Lifecycle Phase 4 (LCP4) Authorisee, who is responsible for nuclear weapons safety in submarines at sea. The LCP4 team provides safety policy and oversees the work of civilian and military personnel in the LCP4 area, which includes management of nuclear weapon safety at sea and assuring compliance on board the UK Nuclear Deterrent submarine force.

This is an opportunity to join an integrated team of highly skilled professionals, where you will help ensure the platforms, systems and equipment we deliver to the UK military front-line are safe and prepared to perform. You will be working in a team that procures, supports and enhances a wide range of military platforms, systems and equipment, getting up-close and personal with elite submarine systems, overseeing engineering challenges unique to this industry and significantly impacting project/programme success.

Responsibilities for SDA Nuclear Safety Engineer

In these roles, you will be equipping, supplying, and supporting the Royal Navy with battle winning weapons and ammunition, maintaining the Submarine for continuous at Sea deterrent through safe operational support and environmental protection. You will also be responsible for the following:
• Contributing to the development and maintenance of policy and process, to satisfy DE&S/SDA corporate standards for delivering and supporting safety management
• Supporting the development and management of safety management systems at project level
• Providing specialist advice on product safety and systems safety matters to relevant stakeholders, ensuring safety considerations are correctly considered, defined and implemented
• Using your knowledge and experience of key safety information to develop and create bodies of evidence for safety cases
• Working with colleagues of all levels, to ensure compliance with relevant UK and EU legislation and regulations, MOD regulations and DE&S/SDA policy
• Regular travel within the UK, including AWE Aldermaston and HMNB Clyde
• Occasional need to go on-board submarines when in harbour (requiring climbing up and down ladders and being comfortable within an enclosed environment)

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• Hold a HNC (e.g., Level 4 or higher) qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline, or have equivalent relevant experience
• Have experience in the use of system safety management tools & processes
• Have experience in the provision of safety or technical advice
It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Experience working in a regulated industry (e.g., oil & gas, defence, nuclear, maritime, rail, or similar)
