We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Naval Architect to join our dynamic Ships team at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol. As an engineer in this role, you will provide subject matter expertise to ensure that the Royal Navy’s fleet of ships are safe, operational, optimised and eco-efficient in all conditions. You will provide key assurance activity and design assessments on our higher-level and most innovative ship projects, placing an emphasis on ship hydrodynamics and policy change to improve performance of in-service assets.

As our Naval Architect, you will use your exceptional communication and influencing skills to build strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to obtain and relay information critical to these projects. You will also represent the NATG at NATO and, as an integral part of our team, will gain wide exposure with other areas of our business and other international Navy’s. This will necessitate travel amongst domestic MoD sites and internationally.Please note some attendance to the stated site may be required for this position.

Responsibilities for SDA Naval Architect

In the role of Naval Architect, you will use your knowledge and skills to provide safety assurance for stability and hydrodynamics for all in-service ships. You will also provide key design assurance for all new ship programmes, e.g. T26, T31, FSS etc. In doing so, you will work with the other certification areas of Structure, Fire, Escape and Evacuation, Propulsion, Explosives, Navigation and Aviation and have exposure to all Royal Navy ships both in design and in-service. This requires in-depth independent assurance and verification skills to deliver Naval Authority Certification of Ship Stability.
Strong technical attributes will be required to deliver the following responsibilities:

• Undertaking stability analysis using Paramarine® to inform design decisions and assure ship safety and operator guidance.
• Undertaking surveys (watertight integrity, inclining experiments and other NA areas e.g., structures & escape and evacuation) for the Naval Authority to assure material state.
• Developing policy and standards for delivering ship stability and assurance through classification society rules.
• Lead on hydrodynamic policy and delivering engineering solutions to provide capable and fuel-efficient ships for the Royal Navy.
• Liaison and Collaboration with other Navy’s through NATO to deliver policy and criteria for ship hydrodynamics.

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in Naval Architecture, ship stability and hydrodynamics
    • Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
    • Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes

It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

  • Naval Architecture stability software experience (Paramarine® preferred).
    • Experience of working in a Naval environment.
    • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
    • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body.
