Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer to join our Defence Quality Assurance Field Force (DQA-FF). If you are looking to be involved with assuring a variety of high profile and technically complex defence programmes, whilst being supported to develop your skills, then this is the role for you!

You will be supported within small teams of Ministry of Defence (MOD) Licensed and Chartered Quality Professionals to make significant contributions to the men and women defending this country.

MOD Manchester, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD

Description

With an office base in Manchester, there will be a requirement to travel to suppliers throughout the North of England, undertaking Quality Assurance in a variety of industries such as ships and submarine equipment, manufacture of aircraft parts, small arms ammunition, missile assemblies, armoured vehicles and bridging systems as well as general engineering and manufacturing.

RAF Valley, Holyhead, Anglesey, LL65 3NY

Description

With an office base at RAF Valley, Holyhead, there will be a limited requirement to travel to other suppliers throughout North Wales and England, undertaking Government Quality Assurance Surveillance (GQAS). This Quality Assurance role has an Air Domain focus predominately covering GQAS on Hawk TMk1 and T2 aircraft as an Authority’s Authorised Representative (AAR) responsible for endorsing Engine Ground Running and Flight Authorisation Certification.

Kentigern House, 65 Brown Street, Glasgow, G2 8EX

Description

With a base in Kentigern House in Glasgow this role provides Engineering QA support in relation to a wide variety of projects and technologies including shipbuilding, submarine maintenance, complex electronics including sighting and thermal imaging systems, explosives and propellants as well as general engineering and manufacturing.

TA Centre, Carters Green, West Bromwich, West Midlands, B70 9LP

Description

With an office based at the TAC Carters Green, where there will be a requirement to travel to Defence Suppliers throughout the East and West Midlands, undertaking Government Quality Assurance Surveillance (GQAS) at a wide range of suppliers undertaking design, manufacture and maintenance on Land Vehicles, Ships or Air frame and component projects for UK MOD and overseas governments.

Chetwynd Barracks, Swiney Way, Chilwell, Nottingham, NG9 5HA

Description

With an office based at Chetwynd Barracks, where there will be a requirement to travel to Defence Suppliers throughout the East and West Midlands, undertaking Government Quality Assurance Surveillance (GQAS) at a wide range of suppliers undertaking design, manufacture and maintenance on Land Vehicles, Ships or Air frame and component projects for UK MOD and overseas governments.

RAF Marham, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE33 9NP

Description

Primarily based on site at RAF Marham near Kings Lynn, where there will be a requirement to travel to other suppliers within the geographic area, including Lincolnshire. This role has an Air Domain focus predominately covering QA Engineering to support the F-35 and Typhoon fast jets maintenance as an Authority’s Authorised Representative (AAR) responsible for endorsing Engine Ground Running and Flight Authorisation Certification (provision of Aircraft Flight Indemnity to the contractor – DEFCON 638 & DEFSTAN 05/100). Have experience and knowledge of Aircraft Engineering Maintenance.

BAE Warton, Preston, Lancashire, PR4 1AX

Description

Primarily based on site at BAE Warton, Preston, where there will be a requirement to travel to other suppliers within the geographic area. This role has an Air Domain focus predominately covering QA Engineering to support the Typhoon development aircraft as an Authority’s Authorised Representative (AAR) responsible for endorsing Engine Ground Running and Flight Authorisation Certification (provision of Aircraft Flight Indemnity to the contractor – DEFCON 638 & DEFSTAN 05/100).

Rolls Royce, Gipsy Patch Lane, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7QE

Description

Primarily based at Rolls Royce in Filton, there will be a requirement to travel to suppliers within a reasonable distance undertaking Government Quality Assurance Surveillance (GQAS).

This busy section offers development within Aero / Marine Engine manufacture and repair, Land Equipment, Munitions and General Engineering.

BAE Glascoed, Glascoed Avenue, Usk, Monmouthshire, NP15 1XL

Description

With an office base at Glascoed, Usk, Monmouthshire, there will be a requirement to travel to suppliers throughout the Region, undertaking Government Quality Assurance Surveillance (GQAS).

Areas of activity include marine systems, air-systems, explosives and propellants as well as general engineering and manufacturing.

Please be advised that due to the nature of security, this role is reserved for sole UK Nationals only.

Responsibilities for Quality Assurance Engineer

The responsibilities of this post will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Plan surveillance interventions and activities to best mitigate supplier and technical risk. Implements delivery of surveillance activities across a number of suppliers, managing allocation of resource to reflect priorities and plan workload.
  • Specify contract quality requirements and contribute to supplier selection.
  • Determine quality management and assurance approaches with suppliers and ensure technical risks are understood and managed.
  • Conduct and manage the delivery of QA surveillance in support of risk management, supplier oversight/assurance, verification, validation and acceptance, and flight indemnity.
  • Contribute to Quality investigations, root cause analysis, internal process performance improvement activities and supplier escalations/interventions.
  • Develop GQA strategies within small to medium project areas seeking innovative opportunities for effective and efficient deployment of GQA resources across the supply chain.
  • Identify and suggest creative or innovative solutions to provide improved performance and GQA service delivery.

This is an incredibly rewarding role where you will be empowered to work with a high degree of autonomy to deliver your workload. With a focus on assurance of defence equipment you will spend a lot of your time at defence suppliers in your area of responsibility. This will involve working in an industrial environment and may include periods in confined spaces, in the vicinity of operating machinery or at height. There will be a requirement to work flexibly and for short periods of overnight travel to support work programmes, customer meetings and training.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • A relevant Level 4 (HNC or higher) engineering or science qualification or demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Demonstrate a breadth of industry/engineering and quality assurance experience gained from involvement with multiple projects
  • Have experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcome

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
