Job Description for Qualified Accountant

At Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), we are excited to be expanding our Finance & Accounting team.

We have progressive and dynamic opportunities for Qualified Accountants to support our business, with positions to develop your career as a Management Accountant or Financial Accountant.

As a Management Accountant, you will be key in delivering consistent and accurate DE&S management accounts, planning and budgeting, and in-year performance reporting.

In the position of a Financial Accountant, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and quality of the financial statements, providing guidance on relevant accounting treatment and ensuring compliance with current regulations, legislation, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities for Qualified Accountant

In this role, you will be entrusted with:

• Interpreting and analysing management information in the context of the external environment and the delivery of organisation strategy
• Scrutinising and challenging monthly forecasts including the identification of efficiencies; identify and investigate drivers of key variances and articulate those accurately
• Influencing decision making through effective communication of financial accounting treatment implications to non-finance stakeholders
• Engaging with stakeholders to ensure proper and effective financial accounting through the reporting mechanisms
• Conducting the reviews of general ledger accounts, also ensuring accounting boundaries are maintained and adhered to
• Providing tax and financial accounting advice to provide options for decision makers in resolving complex affordability challenges
• Reviewing Business cases to assure affordability in support of investment and spending options; utilising guidance from the appropriate Defence authority
• Managing the external audit process including the preparation and review of audit samples liaising with external auditors and business units to ensure satisfactory sign-off of audit samples
• Conduct continuous improvement highlighting and communicating lessons learned

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:
• Qualified accountant (CCAB, CIMA or International equivalent), with full membership (with letters) of the relevant accounting body
It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Demonstration of being an experienced leader, who can work on their own initiative and has had exposure to senior stakeholders and ownership

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
• Financial Planning, Reporting and Resource Management
• Technical Accounting Standards, Statutory Reporting & Compliance
• Making effective decisions
• Managing a quality service

Please note, our salary bands are under review and may increase. If the outcome of the review results in an increase in the minimum salary and your salary offer falls below the new minimum, your salary will be increased to the new amount from your contracted start date. If the new minimum is less than the salary you are offered, the original salary offer will be retained.
