Military Transition Scheme – Project Managers

Are you a service leaver who’s passionate about using your transferable knowledge and experience to ensure projects that support the UK military are delivered on time and within budget? Join the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) Military Transition Scheme and establish a fulfilling civilian career in Project Management, with our support to take your professional development from strength to strength.

At DE&S, we value the wide-ranging skills and experience of service leavers, and we’re working together with the Cabinet Office and Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to offer you the chance to take on a 23-month fixed-term contract. You’ll become a civil servant with access to all of our usual benefits, including a generous leave allowance, hybrid and flexible working, and funding for industry-recognised qualifications. From CV writing and interview preparation to on-the-job and formal training, we’ll coach and support you throughout the scheme, so you can apply for a permanent position with us when you’re ready.

About us

We’re an integral part of UK Defence. We make sure our military is equipped, supported, and connected, as they protect life at home and overseas. We manage a vast range of complex projects to buy, support and supply vital equipment and services that the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force need, so they can operate safely and effectively.

About the role

Join our Project Delivery team in the Land domain. In Land, you’ll have the chance to work across a diverse and fascinating portfolio of equipment, from armoured vehicles, to complex weapons, to helicopters. Here, you’ll use your leadership and people skills to motivate and encourage the wider team, while drawing on your military background to understand our customers’ requirements.

With an emphasis on professional development, we’ll help you enhance your understanding of the project management profession, principles and techniques, and the DE&S methodology of project delivery for Defence. Your development is important to us, and we’ll support you to grow the skills and knowledge you need to progress.

During the scheme, you’ll:

  • Deliver outputs on a variety of projects
  • Develop project documentation
  • Assist in the coordination of a high-performing, cross-functional team
  • Support and contribute to the analysis of requirements, risks, and assumptions
  • Build positive professional relationships, influencing stakeholders and managing expectations
  • Be supported and entrusted to deliver outputs that are critical to UK Defence

“Planning anything in your personal life or career uses skills that can be applied to the role of a Project Manager. Understanding the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘why’ and ‘how much’ of anything you undertake are the fundamentals of the role and anyone can do that. Our role is important: what we do is key to successful and timely delivery of safe and effective equipment to Front Line Commands. Every day we play a functional part of making this happen.” – Laura, DE&S Project Manager

Who are we looking for?

Your understanding of the military’s capability, equipment and impact is vital to our success, and your experience, leadership and ability to deliver in everchanging circumstances will be an asset to our organisation and our wider community.

You’ll need to have existing understanding or previous experience of applying project management tools and techniques to contribute to successful project delivery, as well as experience of engaging or supporting stakeholders. If you can talk to us about ways in which you’ve delivered project outputs and challenges you’ve overcome, you’ll be ticking all our boxes.

We employ many military service leavers, and we’re keen to attract many more. Your experience aligns with our purpose, and your knowledge means you’ll add value for both our end users and the taxpayer from the get-go. In turn, we offer great opportunities both in terms of meaningful, vocational work, and developmentally. ‘Your ambition leads here’ is a key theme in DE&S – we’ll empower you to achieve your goals, and offer progressive training and support to help you unlock a highly successful second career.

Please note only military and former military personnel are eligible to apply.

Our benefits

We’re pleased to offer a generous benefits package to support everything from your work-life balance to your bank balance, including:

  • If the above doesn’t apply, you’ll still get 25 days’ annual leave
  • You’ll also get eight bank holidays and an extra day off for the King’s birthday
  • A market-leading employer pension contribution of around 27 percent, an annual performance-based bonus, and recognition awards
