Job description for Engineering Function Manager
As the deputy to the Engineering lead for Equality Diversity Inclusion and Wellbeing (EDIW), Career and Talent Management you will have a desire to learn new skills working within the DE&S Engineering Function. You will be working closely with other Functions (particularly HR) and more widely to drive continuous improvement in the organisation.
You will have the resilience to cope with challenging stakeholders and flexibility of thought to balance potentially conflicting demands from the business. It is essential you have a good Engineering background and can maintain credibility with Peers and Stakeholders at all levels.
Equally, being an advanced user of MS Excel including Look Ups, Pivot Tables and Formulas, would be very helpful in this role.

Responsibilities for Engineering Function Manager
The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Working with strategic planning and other colleagues to understand data and develop appropriate responses to improve the performance of the business.
- Supporting the development of DE&S Engineering Skill & Talent Schemes (including entry talent) and liaising with MOD and wider Civil Service career management initiatives.
- Developing and updating Engineering Function Strategies and Guidance in accordance with HR policies.
- Managing Engineering Function objectives, reward schemes and succession planning.
- Corporate reporting including business analytics – people statistics and trends, Engineering Function performance.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- An Engineering background (Level 6 qualification or higher e.g. Engineering or Science Degree) or demonstrable experience and ability to maintain credibility with Peers and Stakeholders at all levels
- Professionally registered with the Engineering or Science Council
- Experience managing challenging stakeholders
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to demonstrate a positive attitude
In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
