Job description

Successful applicants will undertake a comprehensive course of practical, vocational and academic training, on a 3-year advance engineering apprenticeship starting September 2020. The Apprenticeship is initially based in HMNB Devonport, with Year 1 full time at Cornwall College studying for Performing Engineering Operations Level 2 and National Diploma in Engineering, covering Mechanical or Electrical.

During years 2 and 3 Apprentices will complete 3 six-month work-based placements at HMNB Devonport or Abbey Wood, with a block release HNC programme of study at Cornwall College. You will also complete an NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Technical Support and HNC in Marine Engineering.

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship, you will be appointed as a Level 1 Engineer and using your knowledge and experience to support and equip the Armed Forces.

We are recruiting up to 20 positions and the Apprenticeship is open to anyone over the age of 16 years at the start of the Apprenticeship. Candidates with a dual nationality may be restricted where they can be placed in the business because of the nature of the work carried out during the Apprenticeship and afterwards.


Candidates must be studying to attain a minimum of 5 Full GCSE’s A – C or Grades 4-9 (or equivalent) including English Language, Mathematics and a Science or Engineering related subject plus two other subjects.

Candidates should also distinguish between an English Language and English Literature qualification awarded.

Applicants on predicted grades should ensure that when asked if they have the mandatory grades, they tick YES, otherwise their application will automatically be rejected.

Shortlisting will be based on qualification grades; an order of merit will be determined by candidates with higher grades during the sifting process.

Please note this is a development Apprenticeship scheme and candidates with higher level qualifications in Engineering may not be eligible. All vocational and academic qualifications held or in progress must be declared.

Your contracted hours will be 37 per week, although some additional study will be required in your own time to complete the academic part of the Apprenticeship.
