We have two Courier Escort Driver positions based at the British Forces Postal Office (BFPO) in Northolt. Due to the location, these roles also offer a recruitment and retention total allowance of £3,250 per annum.

Working 5 days in 7, you will operate in a broad and varied role and depending on operational requirements and staff rosters, may include the following duties: Courier Escort Driver and/or Mail Driver, managing and ensuring the safe and timely escort of Defence Courier Protectively Marked Material (PMM), and Defence Postal Service mails to and from a range of UK locations. In this busy role you will helps deliver in a timely, secure, and safe manner.

You will be a self-motivated, hardworking, and organised individual who can work in a customer-focused environment, to tight timescales while remaining positive and focused on delivery.

For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail throughout our military history including both World Wars. The BFPO is dedicated to providing postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces, Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Other Government Departments (OGDs) and is a renowned brand across Defence. Approximately 250 dedicated, hard-working civilian and military staff work collaboratively across 11 sites in the UK to deliver personal, official, and classified mail to over 650 locations across the globe, keeping our Armed Forces, MOD and OGDs connected through a range of services that play a vital role in sustaining morale and operational effectiveness.

BFPO headquarters is conveniently accessible from the M4 motorway, the A40 and London Underground tube station.

Interviews for this post will be held on-site on the 25/08/2022.Please note some attendance to the stated site may be required for this position.

Responsibilities for Courier Escort Driver

In this role, you will be entrusted with:

• Providing broader support to the organisation by undertaking bespoke Courier Escort Driver tasks in support of short notice tasks as well as assisting with the fleet management by collecting and dropping off vehicles at local garages for scheduled maintenance.
• Assisting with the loading and unloading of Protectively Marked Material and be responsible for the correct, safe, and compliant management and handling of all loads carried (within the weight and size constraints of the vehicle).
• Maintaining appropriate vehicle security and safety if and when the Defence Courier is absent or otherwise engaged. E.g., reporting faults with IT or the handling equipment).
• Analysing possible routes to take and selecting the most appropriate based on deadline delivery dates, number of items to be delivered/collected, or the weather conditions.
• Ensuring that the correct documents and passes are always carried in your work vehicle.
• Daily driving and travel throughout the UK, with overnight duties away from Northolt, and occasionally to mainland Europe and isolated areas.
• Courier Escort Drivers are routinely required to complete overtime due to the nature of the role.

Please note you will be expected to: take reasonable care for the health and safety of others that may be affected by their acts or omissions at work, and to observe best practice and compliance with legislation in the protection of the environment and the conservation of energy. lift mail items weighing up to 11kg unaided, and up to 30kg with assistance.

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold a full UK driving licence with a minimum Cat C, with less than six penalty points.
  • Willingness and ability to complete the Commercial Airport Airside training and Department of Transport Security awareness training to an appropriate level, as well as learn, understand, and conduct your role in line with BFPO’s specific procedures and guidance.
  • Basic level of IT proficiency and understanding as you will be required to use MoD systems.
  • Experienced Multi-drop driver, and able to do single day tasks and weekly road service schedules away from Northolt lasting 4-5 days covering the UK and Germany.

It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience of manual handling and have worked in the defence industry or similar previously.
  • Knowledge of European driving requirements.
