“I was fortunate enough to go aboard a nuclear submarine on a visit to Devonport Naval Base.”
Before joining the Finance Graduate scheme I had no experience in accounting whatsoever, with a degree in History and Masters in International Security I hadn’t really thought about a career in finance until coming across the advert on CS jobs. The scheme looked interesting with lots of opportunity and studying CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) alongside working was a big pull.
My first placement involved dealing with the MOD’s contracts for the maintenance of all the Navy’s Ships, Submarines and Naval Bases. The numbers were huge, and the work daunting at times but you have a big group of graduates around you and I found I quickly built a network of contacts who were always on hand to help.

I was fortunate enough to go aboard a nuclear submarine on a visit to Devonport Naval Base, and now, in my current placement, had the opportunity to ride in a Chinook Helicopter at RAF Odiham.
Studying for CIMA is proving really interesting, it’s tough, but with days out of the office in college-style tuition and study days on top of annual leave, the scheme is built around giving you every opportunity to succeed.
Nearly a year in and I’m really enjoying the work at DE&S, the working environment is great and you’ll face fresh challenges each day.
