The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) and the Royal Mail Group (RMG) have joined forces to deliver a brand-new post box to Bahrain – making it one of the hottest and remotest iconic red boxes in the world.

The post box will ensure that troops can post Christmas messages to loved ones and will also give them a small reminder of home while so far away overseas.

Located 5,000 miles away from BFPO’s Notholt base the post box will be subjected to temperatures in excess of 50°C in the summer.

Simon Barker, UK Process Operations Director at Royal Mail, said: “We were delighted to play Father Christmas and gift an iconic red post box to troops in Bahrain to use as we approach our busiest time of the year. We would encourage everyone to make sure they post by the BFPO and UK posting dates and to always use the postcode. We wish all our colleagues in the BFPO and those serving overseas a very Merry Christmas.”

The strong relationship between BFPO and RMG was recognised at the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Foundation Awards in November recognising RMG’s outstanding collaboration with the BFPO in providing mail to service to the UK Armed Forces.

The award citation noted that, alongside the BFPO, no organisation does more to sustain the morale of the armed forces than the RMG. The historic alliance has seen the two provide vital communication services to personnel and their families, enabling them to stay in touch wherever they are serving.

BFPO, which is a sister organisation to DE&S, delivered over 2 million kg of mail to members of the armed forces in 2017 alone. Meanwhile, DE&S will deliver more than 3,000 turkeys, 500 kg of sprouts and over 1.3 million potatoes to troops stationed abroad in time for the festive season.
